and now YOU!
Growing up, I always knew I'd work in a creative field. For the longest time I thought it would either be as an actress, a singer, or a writer.
After two failed attempts at a screen test from being so shy, I realized acting was not my strong suit. And the singing?... While, you'll still hear me in the shower and find me at a local karaoke lounge but my experience list starts and ends with church choir.
But writing? Oh my goodness, how I LOVE to write. Sometimes it's hard especially when you stop practicing but the emotions words carry. *sigh*, wow.
I wanted to be an author and maybe my passion wasn't fully invested for if something is your dream, you don't stop. And for me, life just kept finding a way to get in between me and my words.
Growing up my mom's favorite show was SATC, she never missed an episode! This introduced me to Carrie, and the way she'd narrate her life and bring out her laptop to type, it ignited something in me. At one point she made me want to become a journalist, maybe even start an advice column!
These were all my passions throughout my youth. Fast forward and I'm graduating high school in 2017. I wanted to become a nurse but you know how it goes... life had other plans. Come 2023 and I finally get my foot into healthcare. That's what I do now, I work in healthcare.
As bizarre as it may seem, I've been working since I was 8 years old. Only recently from 2018-2020 did I take a short hiatus and was *GASP* temporarily retired.
2018 was when I discovered the world of web design. I never once thought I could create my own website. I thought you'd have to have connections of some sort or know all languages of coding. After a deep google search, I learned about domains, web hosting, and html. I GOT TO WORK! And yes... I did make that site about 90% from scratch, This is before I even found out about drag and drop platforms. I even got a sponsored post within a month for my blog! It was fascinating. However, once again... life haha and I shut it down.
Now, quick clarification, and to be fully transparent, I don't come from a lavish background. Lavish I was in terms of love, but lavish in materialistic items and financial routes I was not. Whenever I say life got in the way, I mean in finances. That's why I've worked since I was so young. I became fully financially independent by age 16. Many times I had to stop what I was pursing to work. I worked all throughout high school.
Eventually, this got to me and I thought everything I once dreamed of being would never be in the cards for me. I thought my only purpose was to find some random job and work it for the rest of my life just to make ends meet.
As years went by and COVID happened, the growth and start ups of so many small businesses sky rocketed! People were loosing their ability to connect with their clients in person and had to find someway to keep in touch, so they moved their businesses online.
I didn't know at the time there was a market and a need for web designers. I got back into web designing in 2021 as a creative outlet. I eventually had some friends who worked in the beauty industry ask me for help with social media graphics, making their social media cohesive, and building their sites. I helped them for free of course because I love my friends and gatekeeping is something I'll NEVER do. Eventually I taught those who wanted to learn, everything I knew and how to do it, and they were able to keep up their branding and sites on their own. *PROUD MOM MOMENT*
Fast forward 2023 and I was approached by a local small masonry business to help them create their website and social media. This was a time when I wasn't even advertising services. I wasn't a business, at all. I was just me. Having fun and making sites. I make them their site and their social medias and they begin to get bookings, after bookings for their services. And suddenly it clicks.
This, this is what I want to do. This is my calling. This is something I excel at and love. And maybe one day I'll take another go at becoming a writer but for now this is me, The Scarlet Serif.
